Therapy Is for Everyone (Yes, Even You)!
Life, it's tough, it's hard, it's difficult, and when you are neurodiverse, its ESPECIALLY hard when no one knows your struggles. What can you do to feel good about your mental health? Go to a foot doctor? Nah. See a mental health therapist? ABSOLUTELY, YES!! Everyone should have a therapist at some point in their lives. Guess what?! If you have a therapist, it doesn't mean you're broken or a bad person. It just means is that you have another form of support––someone who is trained who can talk you through what is going on in your life.
I've had my fair share of therapists in my life. I get it. It can be hard to afford a therapist or even find one that you click with, or someone who specializes in and gets diagnoses autism, ADHD,PMDD, etc. and that you can get a long with. I won't go into detail, but I had a therapist that sat there for 10-minutes doing nothing one time and appeared to be asleep during my session. Finding therapy is like finding that shoe that fits. Sometimes it's going to be a tight fit. Sometimes it won't fit, sometimes it'll almost fit and then it will be uncomfortable, or it might be the perfect fit.
Now, how can you make sure what you're discussing in therapy is applicable? Think of therapy like building a house. Every session gives you a new tool—something to help you build or fix your foundation: coping skills, emotional regulation, confidence, life strategies. But you’ve got to use the tools. You can’t build walls without a hammer. You have to do the work. Rome wasn’t built in a day, and neither is healing.
What if I don't like sit down therapy? Did you know there's such thing as dance, art, music, and horse therapies? Search up places near you that offer these therapies to you.
Did you know that going to therapy is NORMAL!?! It can help you feel 80-100% better about the life you're living right now. It won't 100% heal you until you've applied everything you've discussed for a while. It’s not magic, and it doesn’t “fix” everything overnight—but it’s a path forward. And that path? It’s totally worth it.
