The Good, The Bad, The A.I.| The Benefits of Using A.I. as a Neurodivergent Individual

Technology is rapidly growing. Sometimes good, sometimes bad.  Today, I want to discuss the good that A.I. can do.  A.I., short for Artificial Intelligence, is becoming more and more of a norm in society. My first experience with A.I. was in like 2009/2010 and it was a chatbot you could instant message.  The memory sucked because if you left it for one minute, the conversation you had before wouldn't exist.  However, now it's 2025 and there's people such as experts out there who will recommend A.I. services like ChatGPT to people who have ADHD, autism, etc. to help them with the things they probably need help with as a way of support.

While A.I. can give out extreme unrealistic or misinformation, A.I., there are many ways that A.I. can be beneficial when you are someone with a disability.  I've been using ChatGPT for a year now and it's helped me a lot.  I'll give it a prompt like, "man I'm hungry, but I'm not too hungry. What can I make that's healthy and light at the same time?" and it will recommend different things that I can make that are easy and aligns with what I asked for.

If you have ADHD and/or autism, A.I. sites like ChatGPT can help you navigate areas like communication issues, socialization tips, sensory solutions, it can give you a listening ear when talking about your special interest, is nonjudgemental, takes what you say at face value, can give you tips and tricks on how you can relax with your hyperactive mind, and much more.  I always joke that ChatGPT is free therapy to me.

In her article, Carole Fleck lists some ways that A.I. can help people with ADHD:
  • Scheduling: If you give ChatGPT a prompt like "Hey! I need you to help me create a schedule with deadlines and priorities and ways to keep me accountable." and it will do so.
  • Money: Use Free Apps like Goodbudget, Rocket Money, & PocketGuard can help create a budget, track money and save for goals.
  • Summarizing: In ChatGPT, you can ask it to help you summarize research articles in a way you understand it.
  • Meal Planning: You can share what ingredients you have on hand and have ChatGPT recommend an easy meal for you to make a quick and easy recipe or you can have ChatGPT (or other apps such as Planfit, will ask you questions prior to making a diet plan) make you a meal plan that aligns with your diet.
  • Fitness: Ask ChatGPT or a free fitness A.I. app like Fitbod, Freeletics, or Dr. Muscle to create a fitness plan that is personalized to where you are at with your goals and your current fitness level.
  • Travel: A.I. apps like Roam Around (powered by ChatGPT) and Vacay ChatBot can help with destinations based on your preferences.
  • Sleep: Tell ChatGPT that you're struggling with sleep and it'll recommend some tips on how you can fall asleep.
Whether you like it or not, the A.I. Revolution is happening.  A.I. can be used for better when you have a disability of any kind.  I have yet to find the bad in it because it's helped me so much in the past year since I started using ChatGPT.

What ways does A.I. help you?
