EMBRACING NEURODIVERSITY & AUTISM: End of World Autism Month Recap + Thoughts

Image
And that's a wrap on #worldautismmonth2025 !  I'm so proud to be autistic and to have ADHD! Is it hard?! Oh yeah!  Do I struggle with it?!  Everyday!   However, with it being the FINAL day of April *cue *NSYNC's "It's Gonna Be Me song*, it is important that we keep on supporting autism and other neurodiversities as a whole. How can we do this?  We can continue to stay informed on what autism is (a neurodevelopmental disability that can limit people in terms of socializing, communicating, and experiencing their surroundings) which can reduce stigma on many levels.  Below is ways we can take action in accepting autism. Autism doesn't have a look.  Autism is different in each individual.  Each person with autism is like a puzzle piece.  I personally believe that with each person on the spectrum, we are all like puzzle pieces.  We all have a way of contributing to society.  It may look different depending on the limits, but ...

What Can I Control?

Image
What is control?  The  psychology definition of the word control is a person's ability or perception of their ability to affect themselves, others, their conditions, their environment or some other circumstance. Control over oneself or others can extend to the regulation of emotions, thoughts, actions, impulses, memory, attention or experiences.   As an autistic individual, control can be a hard concept to manage.  Here's the thing, we have a realm of what we can and can't control.  Think of reacting to your emotions like reacting to the weather, but with a proper balance.  I don't like the snow, especially when it is dangerous.  I can't control how much or when it snows outside.  HOWEVER, I can control how I react to the snow.  I can be mad OR I can be prepared.  I can go out wearing shorts and a tank top and risk freezing my butt off OR I can wear my warmest set of clothes so I can regulate the warmth in my body that the w...

RFK & Autism: My Thoughts and Opinions (TRIGGER WARNING)

Image
I don't like covering politics, but as an advocate, it's important to know what laws, services, etc. are out there so I can inform people on what is out there.  On WEDNESDAY APRIL 16th, 2025 (AKA: my 27th birthday), Robert F. Kennedy Jr. made remarks on what HE thinks autism is.  The Center of Disease & Control-CDC (2025), came out on April 17th, with new prevalence numbers on autism.  It has been found that 1 in 31 children between the ages of 4-8 have autism.  These numbers come from a study that was taken from 2020-2024. Robert F. Kennedy Jr. made some controversial and damaging remarks in his speech.  He stated that individuals with autism will never be able to work a day in their lives (won't pay taxes), won't marry, can't play baseball, and they destroy families.  This statement is not close to true.  Can it be SLIGHTLY true for individuals whose families struggle with the stress of having a child on the spectrum, especially a child wh...

Autism & Support

Image
Support and autism go hand-in-hand.  Did you know that support is different based on your needs?  Think about getting or having support like swimming.  Some people need a little more help with swimming, and that is okay! What does support look like?  It can be anywhere from getting help with an assignment, having a tutor help you get through some assignments, it can be parental guidance (easing a little when the individual reaches adulthood), financial support from the government, therapy sessions, group therapy sessions, socializing, friends, community support, etc.  Whatever your needs are at is dependent on what supports you might need.  This can also be the same with caregivers.  Caregivers are the ones who tend to individuals with autism the most.  They are the parents/guardians who help provide the most support for individuals with autism.  Especially level 3 individuals who cannot communicate well in a verbal manner.  The caregive...
